Modern Steep terraced Garden (Small Garden)

Bromley Kent

Project current / fresh

A contemporary 2 level addition to a small, steep terraced garden, utilising more space and bringing together the existing deck and sandstone paved patio on the 2 upper levels.

The clients wanted a contemporary design for 2 new levels in their small steep terraced garden, which would utilise more space and bring together the existing deck and sandstone paved patio on the 2 upper levels.

We added contemporary horizontal fencing, a pergola and raised beds for added screening. We designed a built-in timber bench combined with steps in the new layout to make effective use of the small space. A new species rich small lawn for sunbathing immersed in soft planting and greenery. We used bamboos in large troughs for added screening for added for privacy on the existing patio.

In the second, lower level we made modifications to the old air raid shelter which was too solid to go anywhere! and blended it into the garden by adding a green roof, and seating around the side up against the wall. We included raised planters with edibles and espalier fruit trees and space for them to grow their own. To keep the ground surface as permeable as possible used sandstone pavers set in gravel.

Elements Included:

Bespoke timber seat with built in steps
Sandstone paving and steps
Sandstone stepping stone paths through lawn and gravel
Timber Pergola
Contemporary batten fencing
Timber raised beds
Lighting
Steel edging to path, lawn and borders
Green Roof
Planting of Fruit Trees, herbs and edibles
Supplied large planters, planted with bamboo
New planting scheme throughout the garden including climbers, perennials and bulbs

The planting scheme:

Bright, modern planting was used throughout, to make best use of the garden area.

Before we started:

This garden was in dire need of a makeover. It was tired, under-used and unwelcoming. A wasted space.
